Finding the GEMS: Looking at Female Entrepreneurship in Thailand

September's Program

Our September member meeting will feature Ms. Ulrike Guelich, Lecturer and Researcher at the School of Entrepreneurship and Management, Bangkok University, Bangkok.

At Bangkok University, School of Entrepreneurship & Management (SEM), the Thailand team of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Project is located. The GEM project is the most prestigious observatory on entrepreneurship worldwide and measures and characterizes the scope of entrepreneurial activity, comparing it internationally since 1999. In 2012, 69 economies who represented an estimated 74% of the world's population and 87% of the world's GDP took part in the GEM survey. The annual survey is conducted to capture the profiles of the entrepreneurs and the state of the institutions and framework conditions to start up and to grow businesses worldwide. The data is based on two main data sources: Adult Population Survey (APS) and National Expert Survey (NES). You can find Thailand-specific information on entrepreneurial framework conditions and findings on Thai entrepreneurship in the last GEM Thailand Report.

Ms. Guelich notes that in a global comparison, Thailand has some outstanding features regarding entrepreneurship:

  1. an equal number (even slightly higher) of men and women entrepreneurs.
  2. High entrepreneurship rates in all stages.
  3. Highest rate of established business owners.
  4. Gender equality in entrepreneurship.

In her presentation, Ms. Guelich will identify possible explanations for this phenomenon in the Thai context, and give some insight from interviews with successful women entrepreneurs in big family businesses in Thailand. We can discuss a wide range of points where Thailand differs from other economies when it comes to entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial attitudes, aspirations and ways to do business.
